What is IoT?
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the collaborative operation of physical devices via network connectivity. It’s a mouthful, but what it means in layman’s terms is that your everyday devices, such as your phone, your car and even your fridge, are all wirelessly connected to each other to enhance their functionality. Let’s say you’re on your way home from work and you decide to stop at a petrol station to fill up on fuel. Your car reports its location via GPS and your other devices take advantage of this information. Your fridge uses sensors to see you are low on milk and, realising your car is currently at a petrol station, sends a message to your phone and prompts you to buy milk while you’re there.
We are literally staring at the future unfolding in front of our very eyes and most of us do not even realise it. As a consumer, you might think “Oh that’s cool!” But as a business, you need to turn that interest into action. You need to look at ways to bank on the IoT and try to figure out how it can enhance your productivity.
Smart printers are a great example. They sit there every day printing and faxing away. But then something goes wrong. With a smart printer, you don’t need to do anything when this happens thanks to the printer’s reporting capability, which reports anything which may affect its functionality. Running low on ink? No problem! A tech will arrive ready to replace the supply. Printer running sluggishly? No problem! The same tech will perform maintenance and ensure the printer is running at its optimum level. It is this customer experience that we at Arrow Voice & Data strive to deliver.
Almost everything we provide has some sort of reporting that provides information we use to our customers’ advantage. Your internet connection is another example of how this connectivity can benefit you. We know only too well the impact of losing your internet connection. This is why some of our top online products come with specialised hardware that reports on the status of the connection. By doing so, we can identify any anomalies and act on them before they become an issue. Oft times, the problem is fixed before the customer even realises anything is wrong.
