Traditional training dictates that you sit in the same room as the presenter while the presenter draws on the black/whiteboard as he/she, for lack of a better word, presents. This method certainly has its merits but it is quite limited in the sense that attendees physically need to be at the conference. As our days become more and more hectic, physically attending a conference can be a big ask. The solution? Web Conferencing.
What is Web Conferencing?
Web Conferencing is the means by which a lecturer or presenter employs the use of internet technology to present ideas to multiple people in a virtual room environment. Some web conferencing platforms allow for Video Conferencing which puts faces on voices you would otherwise never meet. These platforms, of course, require the use of specialised software to be able to do so. Other available platforms support chat discussions, screen sharing, whiteboards on top of the voice and video functions.
So how does it actually work?
As the name implies, Web Conferencing is done through the web or more specifically, through the internet. There are a few ways to do this – ranging from proprietary software as mentioned above, where software is installed in both presenter and attendees’ computers, to online hosted conferencing solutions. The presenter, with his/her chosen platform will set up the virtual room and invite attendees as you would with any conventional conferences. The main difference is that participants do not need to physically be at the location specified by the presenter but instead logs on to the virtual room by way of login credentials. From there, the presenter can proceed as if in the same room as the attendees – pointing, drawing, and even passing control to anyone present in the room if needed.
Type of presentation through web conferencing.
The type of presentation one is able to create through Web Conferencing is almost limitless. From online training, education, seminars, business meetings, sales or lead presentation to remote support – all of these are possible with the right platform.
